Freedom or nuisance? – Kathimerini (Greece)

Amsterdam struggles to balance freedom, tourism and quality of life

The leading Greek newspaper Kathimerini published an extensive article on the growing tensions in Amsterdam between economic growth through tourism and protecting quality of life. Tourism strategist Isabel Mosk was quoted in the article on the limits of Amsterdam as a brand and destination. She emphasised that the city is known for its freedom, but that this should not spill over into nuisance or anti-social behaviour. Isabel once again argues for fundamental choices around growth, behaviour and balance: ‘Freedom is not a licence for anti-social behaviour.’
